MathNED was launched on the 12th of August 2003 in Accra, Ghana, by the Deputy Minister of Manpower Development and Employment as an advocacy non-governmental organization promoting the use of mathematics for Ghana’s national education and development. The belief is that the proper and commonplace use of mathematics in all sectors of human endeavour can propel Ghana into a developed country status. This is possible if the study of mathematics is made less stressful and mathematics itself becomes meaningful and relevant to those who study it. Consequently, teachers of mathematics must be sensitized and equipped to provide opportunities for their students to enjoy the study of mathematics. Also students, and for that matter Ghanaians, must understand mathematics to the extent that they see how mathematics ensures efficiency in all human endeavours. This is what MathNED has set out to achieve.
Currently, MathNED operates from a small residential house in Tema. The directors are: Ms Esther Ofori, CEO of Ghana Trade Fair Company Ltd., Accra; Mrs. Abena Kwakyi, Director of Education of Morning Star School, Accra; Ms Catherine Agbettoh, Vice Principal of St. Francis Teachers Training College, Hohoe; Dr. Kofi Baku, Lecturer at University of Ghana and Barrister at Law, Accra.
The advisory board members are: Dr. Frank Odoom, CEO of Quality Insurance Company Ltd., Accra; Mr. Patrick Nutor, CEO of Accu-Computers, Accra; Dr. K. B. Afewu, CEO of Insel Communications, Accra; Dr. Ben Gordor, HOD Mathematics, University of Cape Coast, Cape Coast. |
